Driver Skills Manager

Chattanooga, TN

The primary responsibility of this role is to lead the development and execution of a comprehensive CDL driver skills training and development environment that aligns with the strategic direction established by the Senior Director of Enterprise Safety. The role is focused on reducing accident and injury rates through implementing on-the-road and off-the-road driver skills testing.  This position ensures full compliance with all Department of Transportation (DOT) training requirements and maintains up-to-date knowledge of evolving DOT regulations and North American Transportation Management Institute safety principles and practices.  The individual in this role will oversee the selection, management, and coaching of a team of safety professionals to deliver high-quality safety training programs. They will be responsible for ensuring that safety procedures and processes are effectively implemented, monitored, and measured for impact. Success in this position will be measured by meeting key performance indicators (KPIs) defined by the Senior Director of Enterprise Safety.

Responsibilities

  • Execute training initiatives targeted at improving safety culture and compliance.
  • Demonstrate leadership and people management skills
  • Lead implementation of safety industry best practices.
  • Continuous education on training requirements by DOT.
  • Execute and track company training programs.
  • ⁠Track and report out on KPI’s to further the vision and mission of Safety.
  • Effectively communicate with Leadership through oral and written communication
  • Conduct annual performance reviews of direct reports.

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities

  • Comprehensive knowledge of regulations as they impact DOT Training Requirements.
  • Ability to lead projects and influence others to obtain buy-in.
  • Strong internal and external customer service skills.
  • Strong problem-solving skills.
  • Ability to work in a fast-paced constantly changing environment. 
  • Working knowledge of Microsoft Office products.
  • High level communications skills, written and verbal.
  • Strong organizational and interpersonal skills.

Education/Experience

  • Transportation experience required.
  • Defensive driver training knowledge and experience required.
  • Commercial Driver’s License a plus.
  • Double Trailers knowledge a plus.
  • Experience leading, coaching and mentoring direct reports.
  • Hazardous Materials knowledge a plus.
